Description

St Lucia- A Green Island in a Sea of Blue

October 24-31, 2026

St Lucia is best known by the iconic Pitons (French for “Mountain Peaks”) in the picture above, twin peaks bordering a beautiful bay. But it is also a great dive destination in an incredibly natural setting. Dan and I went there in November 2024 and found it to be a delightful experience. St Lucia is one of the Windward Islands, and as such the temperature does not vary much from the average with a constant breeze.

We stayed at Anse Chastanet, a lovely resort, which at one time was a sugar plantation. The name means “Small Bay Chastanet” where Chastanet is the name of the original owner. It is small with only fifty-four rooms and is in a very natural state. With a 4.5 out of 5 on Trip Advisor, it is considered a 4 STAR resort.

Only the beachfront villas have air conditioning, but it was too cold inside when we checked them out! We stayed on the “hill” where there was an exceptionally large and open room which included a huge bathroom, a sitting room, and a bedroom with louvers to close it off from the outside. There was a small fridge, coffee maker, and samples of particularly good local rum. To the right of the open sitting room was the bedroom with beds covered in mosquito nets. You could close off the bedroom with louvres, but we did not because we enjoyed the breeze too much.

In the mornings we would wake to visits from “Bob,” our resident St Lucia Black Finch, who came looking for breakfast. He would eat most anything we put on the ledge while fighting off all the competing birds. We enjoyed sipping our coffee and looking out over the ledge at the incredible view from our balcony.

The Dive Shop was located at the beach and was an efficient operation. All divers were required to do a shore checkout, which included a mask flooding and recovery. If you come as a group of 8 or more divers you get a private boat but we were only there to check the resort out so we went on the smaller boats. The reefs were healthy with plenty of marine life and variety. The resort was just a few minutes away from the bays with the Pitons, so we dived there a lot.

Visibility was good with minimal currents. The island is volcanic (with some still active!) so the underwater slopes are steep in locations. We did a total of 5 dives over our short stay but it was enough to convince us that it was a worthwhile dive location.

In many ways this location gave me a Fiji vibe, and although the diving was very different, it was in a good way, as evidenced by the photos accompanying this article.

The service and food at the resort is far and above what we have experienced at other resorts, while maintaining a natural island feel. It’s definitely a unique experience!
